Looking back at the 11th DTTG Workshop in Krakow

05.08.2025

This year's 11th DTTG International Workshop ‘Qualitative and Quantitative Analysis of Clays and Clay Minerals’ took place in the beautiful and historic city of Krakow, Poland. The event was organised by the Institute of Geological Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences (ING PAN) under the direction of Professor Derkowski and his dedicated team. The participants were offered an intensive five-day programme. The workshop covered many different topics. These are all things that modern clay mineral experts need to know: from XRD in qualitative and quantitative analysis and current challenges in the characterisation of clay minerals to stable isotopes and their measurement. In addition to providing theoretical background knowledge with numerous expert tips, many practical exercises were also carried out. In well-equipped laboratories, the participants were able to learn and apply the latest methods for analysing clay minerals.

The supporting programme included a poster session where participants could try fantastic Polish beers and a workshop dinner where they could try the best Galician dishes. This gave the participants plenty of opportunity to talk about their work and meet new people. The next workshop will take place again in Krakow in 2027. It is advisable to register early as there is a higher demand than places. The DTTG would like to thank Professor Derkowski and his team for the excellent organisation and the exciting contributions.
